Hum Your Sinus Headache Away

wellbeing card 2
Sinus Headaches cause pain and stress.

Can humming help your sinus headache? Yes, it looks like it.

I was super happy to find an article in the the New York Times that discusses how humming can help to relieve sinus infections and headaches.

Preventative medicine and self care are very important in acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. A simple exercise such as humming to heal headaches is wonderful and impressive.  If it works.

How does humming help sinus headaches?

Humming is thought to reduce sinus inflammation by stimulating the release of nitric oxide, a signaling molecule in the body which helps smooth muscle relax and causing the blood vessels to relax in order to to increase blood flow.  Less inflammation means the body recovers quicker and can fight off infections.

Many healing traditions incorporate sound.  When you hum you can feel the vibrations throughout your head.  It can even feel that you are loosening up the clogged sinuses. It is a kind of internal sound massage.

Combination Treatments for Sinus Headaches

Many of my acupuncture patients have, allergies, asthma, or  chronic sinusitis, making them more susceptible to sinus infections and headaches. Sometimes this is during the cold and flu season of the winter.  And sometimes sinus headaches are more likely during allergy seasons.

We will start the acupuncture a month or two before the problems is too severe in order to prevent the issue.  And continue through the challenging times.

In addition, I often recommend self acupressure routines can help to supplement the acupuncture treatment.

Some traditions of qi gong and acupressure self care include humming certain tones to help stimulate the healing process.   Now we know that the humming can help to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Incorporating many healing techniques can slowly lead to healing sinus headaches and preventing them from returning.
