Prevent a cold with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs

woman with a cold 21

In my last post about home remedies for colds I shared some of the best tips like gargling with salt water and drinking ginger tea.

Acupuncture and herbs are a great way to treat and prevent colds too.

Acupuncture and Gua Sha:

People don’t think of acupuncture for colds, but it is  a great way to prevent getting sick and help kick the cold once you have it.  Acupuncture helps boost your immune system to get rid of that pesky cold that won’t go away.

Gua Sha which is a massage with a spoon or hard tool helps the acupuncture make people feel better quickly.

Chinese herbs:

Chinese herbs have long been used to prevent a cold.  Many herbs have shown the ability to boosting your immunity and also kill any lurking viruses and bacteria. The two most common formulas I will use are Gan Mao Ling and Yin Qiao san based on your symptoms.

Gan Mao Ling: Gan mao means “common cold” in Chinese.  This herbal formula is great for preventing and treating common colds.  Take it preventatively when there is a cold going around or if you have a cold.   It is best to treat are sore and itchy throat, and a little cough. If you are sweating gan mao ling may not be strong enough.

Yin qiao san:  Yin qiao san is stronger than gan mao ling.  If you are experiencing a light fever and light chills, sweating, and a sore scratchy throat, this may be a good formula for you.  Gan mao ling is better for mild colds and also to prevent a common cold.  Yin qiao san is better for stronger colds and it is best to take the herbs early in the cold.

Reishi:   Reishi  (also called Ling Zhi) is a mushroom that has long been used to to boost energy and immunity. I take reishi in the winter to prevent getting a cold.  It works great because even though my patients are sick, I stay healthy.  For these herbs, be careful to purchase from a reputable vendor who sells organic products, because there is a lot of counterfeit out there.  And who wants pesticides in their herbs.

Good health to you all!
