Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice used for many centuries as a natural solution to improve your sex drive.

A recent study has shown that acupuncture can help increase female libido, arousal, reduce pain during sex, and improve sexual desire and arousal. It can also help to reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and improve wellness.

These symptoms combined are referred to as female sexual dysfunction (FSD) which is a common condition that affects about 4 out of 10 women. It can become a significant burden in one’s life and relationships but it is often hard to speak about the issue.

Women with FSD report pain during sexual intercourse, reduced sense of arousal, and difficulty achieving orgasm.  There are many causes of female sexual dysfunction. Overactive pelvic floor muscles and pelvic pain can contribute to female sexual dysfunction. Furthermore, women who are approaching menopause may be at increased risk for FSD.

Acupuncture is effective treatment for female sexual dysfunction. It is also a very relaxing therapy.

Acupuncture involves a comprehensive approach to determine the underlying imbalance in the body causing the health concern. The treatment is then personalized to each patient targeting the root of your problem.

As a doctor of acupuncture, I will share how acupuncture works to improve sexual function, explain the clinical research that proves it works, and also how Chinese medicine understands and addresses this issue.

How Acupuncture works to Improve Sex Drive

Acupuncture is a treatment within Chinese medicine that focuses on balancing the body to bring you back to health. I like to say acupuncture works by resetting the body.

Acupuncture has been shown to improve ovarian function, treat premature ovarian failure, and regulate estrogen levels.  Scientists believe that acupuncture regulates hormones by improving the function of the neuroendocrine system

According to Chinese medical theory, decreased sexual desire is due to a deficiency in Qi, the body’s energy. Qi flows throughout the body giving you the ability to function.  When the Qi of certain organ systems declines or develops impeded circulation illness occurs. The sex drive is mostly linked to the Chinese Medicine Kidney and Liver organ systems.

Acupuncture works by removing blockages in Qi energy and increasing the amount of Qi. By targeting the correct acupuncture points, we are able to correct the root imbalance leading to long-term improvements.

Balance of Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang SymbolAccording to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is composed of yin and yang qualities, which must be balanced in order for the body to function properly. Yin and yang energies are associated with different qualities. For example, yin is associated with wetness and coldness, while yang is associated with warmth and dryness.

Yin deficiency is a common cause of decreased libido. Women with a yin deficiency may have hot flashes and dryness. Acupuncture points will also be aimed at increasing the yin of the body to balance out the yang.

A Clinical Study Shows Acupuncture Improves Female Libido

The benefits of acupuncture are numerous, including increased blood flow, relieving dryness, and reducing pain during intercourse and other symptoms like stress and anxiety.

A recently published study shows that acupuncture may improve the quality of sex life of women. The researchers conducted a small study in which twenty-four women were treated with acupuncture. After the treatment, all of the women improved their desire and arousal scores. Their orgasm rate was also improved.

The acupuncture treatment focused on the treatment principle of tonifying the kidney essence and regulating the chong and ren channels. Additionally, the aim was to “promote normal hormone release, and relieve anxiety “

Acupuncture points was alternated front and back treatments and comprised of acupuncture points that treat gynecological diseases, reduce stress, and relieve pelvic pain.

The points were all bilateral except for points on Ren and Du channels. The acupuncture treatment lasted for 30 minutes.  Front and back treatments were alternated, treatment was given every other day 2-3 times per week.
