Every year in early October I blog about home remedies for the common cold.  That’s because every year my patients come into the office coughing, sneezing, and with sore throats and ask me what to do. Fortunately I don’t get a cold this time of year because I know a few techniques to prevent it. Why do people get colds during the change of seasons? Acupuncture and Chinese medicine explain that you are more susceptible to a cold because body’s energy, or qi, is stressed. The qi is responsible for your immune functioning.  So when your qi is taxed, your immune system is also slightly run down. How to boost your qi?   The good news is that there are

Eye twitching is annoying.   A fluttering eye will buzz on and off throughout the day causing distraction and frustration.  Sometimes, the fluttering can be quite strong leading to total closing of the eye and impairing your vision. Most often eye twitching is caused by stress, fatigue, use of alcohol, or irritation of the eye.  In some, the eye twitch becomes chronic which is called benign essential blepharospasm.   Benign essential blepharospasm not only is annoying but can lead to periodic trouble seeing. In a very small number of individuals, chronic eye twitching is a sign of  a neurological condition.  If the eye twitching goes on for many weeks, it is best to consult a physician or healthcare professional. This morning on NPR there was a very informative piece about the causes of migraines and why women suffer more from migraines than men. The story explains the that one reason migraines occur is because of bursts of electrical activity in specific areas of the brain.   Often they begin in  the visual center, which is why people will get auras from migraines.  Then it will travel through different regions explaining why there can be so many different symptoms related to the migraine headache. Originally women were thought to get more migraine was because women cannot handle stress.  However, now researchers are seeing links between hormone imbalances and migraines. Acupuncture for Migraine headaches Migraine headaches are very commonly treated with

This is the fourth article in a series focusing on acupuncture for back pain. Car accidents, injuries, and training are not the only reason people develop back pain. Stress is also be a significant cause of back pain. Acupuncture is very effective for stress induced back pain because it can address both the physical and mental aspects of the cause of the pain. This patient came to me with chronic back pain on the lower left side. When I asked where the pain was specifically, she pointed to the sacro iliac joint. This is a very common location for lower back pain.  Stress also causes back pain by creating muscle tension and spasms. She had back pain for a number

People with back pain often find relief in acupuncture after other treatments have not worked. From a Chinese medicine and acupuncture point of view, this is because the underlying imbalance was not corrected.  A successful treatment must be tailored specifically to what is going on with your back. Physiologically, it is because acupuncture works holistically with the body, address many levels of the pain and condition.  It works to relax the muscles, stimulate healing in the connective tissues, and reset the nervous system. What are the imbalances that would need correcting? There is an old saying in Acupuncture.  “When there is no movement, there is pain.  When there is movement, there is no pain.” Qi, the body’s energy flows through

This is the second in a series about acupuncture and IVF  written by Jessica Yunker, my associates.  Jessica is an expert in infertility, women’s health, and acupuncture for IVF. Acupuncture can help you prepare for the IVF procedure. Five Ways Acupuncture Helps to Prepare for IVF 1. Improve ovarian function: Part of the IVF process involves stimulating the ovaries to produce more follicles and higher quality eggs, since healthy eggs are the basis for a successful pregnancy. Acupuncture can help increase the number of eggs and the quality of those eggs in the months leading up to the IVF procedures. 2. Lower FSH levels: A high FSH (follicular stimulating hormone) level suggests that the ovaries are not functioning as well

Yesterday morning I heard a distressing story on the radio about osteoporosis medication increases the risk of  unusual and serious fractures.  Women taking osteoporosis drugs called bisphosphonates are nearly five times as likely to have a serious unusual fracture.  Osteoporosis is a serious condition as hip and other fractures are terrible accidents, yet the side effects of the medication may be worse. One answer for many women may be tai chi.  This may particular a good choice for women who have osteopenia, when the bones are beginning to soften, but do not yet have osteoporosis, as the tai chi may be able to prevent the disease from progressing. Tai Chi for Osteopenia I always recommend my patients concerned about osteoporosis

Interstitial cystitis is something I often treat in my acupuncture clinic. This is the second in a series on acupuncture for interstitial cystitis.  In this post I will tell you about how acupuncture can reduce pain, inflammation, and urinary urgency for interstitial cystitis. Acupuncture’s Approach to Interstitial Cystitis Over two thousand years ago, acupuncture physicians described a syndrome which is characterized by painful and frequent urination.  Accompanying symptoms can be tenderness in the lower abdomen, a feeling of incomplete urination, sexual dysfunction, changes in the color of urination, urinating at night, and also mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.  Although they were not speaking specifically about interstitial cystitis, these same principles can be used to create an effective

As a New York acupuncturist, I see a lot of different types of people with shoulder pain. Mothers, athletes, mature individuals, artists working on a draft board, and those stuck at their desks working on a computer.  Continuing my series on neck and shoulder pain, I wanted to share a few success stories.  Today I will write about two young mothers with shoulder pain and how their individualized treatment helped them feel better. A young mother with shoulder pain Young mothers are prone to shoulder pain from lifting babies, diaper bags, and strollers, not to mention the stress associated with being a mom.  This woman was in her mid thirties with two small children.  She developed nagging shoulder and neck

Overactive bladder is a syndrome characterized by the frequent, strong, and sudden urge to urinate. The syndrome can seriously disrupt your life by interrupting your work and make you avoid social situations. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help.  Acupuncture and Chinese medicine has been treating syndromes of frequent urination for over 2000 years. How Acupuncture Treats Overactive Bladder   Acupuncture helps reduce the symptoms of overactive bladder by relaxing the nerves and muscles associated with the bladder.  Overactive bladder may be caused from bladder spasm creating the sudden need to urinate or a sudden feeling of urination when the bladder is filling, although it is not totally full. Contraction of the pelvic floor muscles may also be a factor.  Acupuncture
